Thanks Andy. I just did a few judicious search and replace operations (motorist=junkie; petrol=crack; unleaded=ecstacy etc.). Any quality of writing can be traced back to the original article, itself a churned pressed release from RMI Petrol, which was all over the press like a rash.

A proper journalist would look at wider issues of car dependency (63% car modal share in the UK according to the National Travel Survey!) and question whether that's a good thing, or join up the dots with regard to wider issues of public health, local and global environment, obesity etc. but that would be asking too much of journalists these days (as detailed in Flat Earth News).

Good idea, and well written. And quite accurate.

I love the end sentence in the original: I tend to think that anything that annoys motorists is probably a good idea.

I have been using Moneydance but for the second time, over 2 years, it has lost my data and the result? I could only open from a much earlier backup copy as it said the other backups were corrupt! It cannot download statements from UK banks. It's fine otherwise for my needs but I need to manually key in my transactions from my statements. A total waste of time and I can't be bothered anymore. Two years ago I searched for the best application from reading reviews. It seems that nothing has improved much! need a financial program so that I can do all of this easily and keep a track of my finances. I wish I was a programmer, a good money earner I reckon. Why can't there be a Mac version of Money? It's by far the best program.

I have used Fortora for past year, but on upgrading to Snow Leopard the date order has gone haywire and can't be corrected. Fortora's tech support is useless - they have failed to reply to 3 emails now. Any ideas. or should I be looking at iBank instead?

Mac is not very intuitive, the terminology is different i.e. debtor’s invoice, creditor invoice rather than bill, invoice, payable and receivable. http://www.directfinancialassistance.com

Very interesting thread. I have used spreadsheets, Money and Quicken over the years to manage my personal finances, but never really been happy with any of them. I have always thought of writing what I need (I have a bit of software development experience) and am currently learning to develop on the Mac as a lead-in to developing iPhone apps for my son to play with. So, I was thinking of combining the two desires and stumbled on all this. My approach to managing money is pretty simple. I have done the matching of statements and reconciliation thing which is time consuming and not really necessary. Instead I focus on what needs to be paid and how much money I have/need to pay it, with a bit of tracking/budgeting thrown in for the bigger stuff in life. This approach may appeal to some I have seen post on here, others maybe not. Anyway, if anyone is interested I would sure love input so let me know and I'll look at setting up a thread or blog somewhere.

Hi Cheerful,

Let's put it down to the zealotry of a then-new cycle commuter who couldn't quite believe what goes on.

I've changed jobs now - I commute by car and see things from more sides. Which is another way of saying "I agree with you".

What I would say, though, is that cyclists tend to get caught between the pedestrian and vehicular worlds, and not really catered to in a meaningful way.

Thanks for stopping by :)

as a cyclist (20 mile commute each way) then a multidrop lorry driver, why don't you just stop moaning the lorry driver is on a broken lined cycle lane, as it is broken he is perfectly legal, for his info he could even load on a double yellow as long as it isn't accompanied by blips on the curb. just try & understand a cyclist is sometimes a pedestrian, sometimes a driver and the world isnt perfect and if everyone did everything by the book nothing would ever get done, if he didnt stop to load there some woman on another forum would be moaning about ceva being useless and not delivering her smalls that day, if that van driver didnt get a bit close to you someones masonry would have been late and if neither of those things happened you wouldnt have anything to moan about and I wouldnt be wasting my time replying. Live and let live and if anyone does anyhting that bad you can always kick off a wing mirror or two ;)
