Trapped

Oh, man. My shoulder and neck feel like someone’s in there with a medaeval torture rack, stretching them in directions they’re just not supposed to go. My shoulders have been shot to pieces for a while – probably since I left CompuServe, where in 1999 all staff, including contractors like me, received a weekly back, shoulders, arms and hands massage. I always thought that it was a very enlightened approach to the issue of staff health; I’ve never come across it anywhere else, which is a shame. On top of that, the chairs in the Hammersmith office of AOL/CompuServe were excellent: either Herman Miller Aerons or very good look-a-likes. Having said that, I only worked there for three months. I’ve been in this job for over two years.

I know my posture isn’t the best it could be, but I’m constrained (I think) by my circumstances – bog-standard office chair, my height (5’6’’), the fixed height of my desk etc. The biggest difference (for me) would be a regular massage. I’ve mentioned it in department meetings before, but it gets treated as a ‘blue sky’ idea. OK – the budget is a bit constrained, but how important is the health of a company’s workers?

I’ve taken a couple of painkillers, but I really need to get my shoulders sorted out.

Pushaman

One of my colleagues informed me, while waiting for the kettle to boil, that they had a dream last night in which I was the school cool dude, svengali and drug dealer, which couldn’t be further from the truth, really.

I would just like to point out that I was not cool at school. James Hanson once said that I try too hard to be cool, but being a ‘try-hard’ and actually being cool are two very different things.

Maybe I’m just making up for it now.

Ten Pence

I bought a ticket from Oldfield Park to Bristol Temple Meads for the first time today. On other occasions I’ve had a season ticket on the go, so there has been no need to buy day returns. But with impending leave booked, I didn’t feel the value in laying out for weekly tickets where 3 out of 4 days will go unused. Anyway, the cost of a day return: £4.70. Not bad, I hear you cry. Cost from Bath Spa to Bristol (an extra mile in each direction): £4.80. Still not bad. Cost of a day return from Oldfield Park to Bath Spa: £2.10. Probably the most expensive journey (per mile) in the country!

Australia Night

Last night I had the displeasure of washing up while listening to the England v Australia friendly from Upton Park. I was disappointed that James Beattie’s England debut was overshadowed by the inept performance given by the rest of the first-half team. I genuinely hope that Sven will give him another chance, because I’m sure he can shine at international level when surrounded by committed team-mates. He clearly wasn’t last night.

These overpaid professional footballers seem not to care about playing for their country. The talk from the manager in the run-up to the game, downplaying the significance of the fixture, clearly didn’t help. Committing himself to eleven half-time substitutions was also rather presumptuous, though the P.A. announcement of the substitutes received the biggest cheer from the England fans, who had little else to be happy about, bar the final whistle, all night.

Perhaps we should abolish the concept of ‘friendly’ matches – especially against traditionally fierce sporting rivals like Australia – and replace them with Test Matches, as in Rugby and Cricket. That should guarantee a bit of fire, a bit of passion from the players. Clearly the F.A. and Sven himself have to rein in some of the more vocal Premiership managers like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger and remind them that the highest priority should be the National team, not club football. This will be hard to do when there is so much at stake in, for instance, the "Champions’" League when compared to the European Championships or the World Cup.

Never mind, Beatts. Your chance will come again.

Southampton Lose Again

I didn’t see the highlights, but it sounds like we met Man Utd at the top of their game, unfortunately. Now we have to pick ourselves up for the FA Cup replay at Millwall on Wednesday. We have people round for dinner, so I can’t watch the game on Sky at the pub, but I’ll be keeping my fingers, toes and who knows what else crossed…
